This species is thought to originate from the Samoan Islands, however, the exact origin is not known.

The last collection dates to around 1870, and the species is most likely extinct. [1]

The species may be identical with Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze.

This species occurs from Australia and parts of Melanesia to New Zealand, where it appears to be quite widespread.

The species is known to naturally hybridize with Carex virgata Sol. ex Boott, such hybrids are known at least from the Chatham Islands.

The Alpine Bog Sedge is a flat cushion plant, that occurs on some of the Hawaiian Islands, namely on Kaua’i, Maui, Moloka’i, and O’ahu.

The species is restricted to high elevations, where it grows in so called alpine bogs.

The species occurs as well as a very small relict population on the island of Tahiti, where it is restricted to only two ridges of the Mt. Orohena, the highest mountain of Tahiti.
