This hebe species grows as an up to 2 m tall shrub and has light – to bright violet flowers.

The Coromandel Koromiko is often associated with pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa Sol. ex Gaertn.) forest, but is also commonly found at open places.

The species contains three subspecies: the nominate form occurs on the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island and some of its offshore islands like Pakihi- and Rotoroa Island; Veronica pubescens ssp. rehuarum (Bayly & de Lange) Garn.-Jones is endemic to Great Barrier Island; Veronica pubescens ssp. sejuncta (Bayly & de Lange) Garn.-Jones occurs on Great Barrier-, Little Barrier Island, and on the Mokohinau Islands.

The nominate subspecies, Haloragis erecta ssp. erecta (Murray) Oken, is widely distributed over New Zealand, while the subspecies Haloragis erecta ssp. cartilaginea (Cheeseman) Orchard is endemic to the Surville Cliffs in the far north of New Zealand’s North Island.

The species obviously occurs also on Raivavae and Tubuai in the Austral Archipelago. [1][2][3]

The species is split into several varieties, of which at least four occur within the Polynesian region, Geniostoma rupestre var. crassum (Cheeseman) Conn (endemic to New Zealand), Geniostoma rupestre var. glaberrimum (Benth.) Conn (most parts of Polynesia, especially French Polynesia), the nominate Geniostoma rupestre var. rupestre (western Polynesia), and Geniostoma rupestre var. tongense (A. C. Sm. & Stone) Conn (Fiji, Niue and Tonga).

Many of these varieties include synonyms that formerly were treated as distinct species. [1]

This species can be found in the tropical regions almost worldwide, though its native range probably comprises the coastal areas along the tropical Pacific of the Americas, Australia, Melanesia, and probably parts of Polynesia. [1]

The very variable species is about 1,5 m tall and bears small white flowers and glossy black berries.
