This species, which is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand, is known to naturally hybridize with at least four other members of its genus, these are: Pimelea aridula ssp. oliga C. J. Burrows, Pimelea mesoa C. J. Burrows, Pimelea oreophila ssp. hetera C. J. Burrows, and Pimelea oreophila ssp. oreophila C. J. Burrows.

This species was described in 2008, it is known for certain only from Himatangi Beach, a place at the southeastern coast of the Manawatu District on the North Island of New Zealand, but it may occur in other places as well.
