New Zealand: Antipodes Islands; Auckland Islands; Campbell Island (Campbell Islands); Chatham Islands; North Island; South Island; Stewart Island; Putauhina Island (Titi Islands)

This species occurs from Australia and parts of Melanesia to New Zealand, where it appears to be quite widespread.

The species is known to naturally hybridize with Carex virgata Sol. ex Boott, such hybrids are known at least from the Chatham Islands.
